Big City Chic: the winter review
July 20th 2007 05:52
I am so late on this review that the summer clothes are already making their way into the stores. But on the plus side? That means the winter clothes are mostly on sale. Woot.
I have never seen as many pairs of jeans in a store in my life as I did when I entered Big City Chic. There were all different kinds - dark, light, mid, long, short, casual dressy, they were all there. Starting at a size 14 and going to a size 24. A reasonably ok fit, with a decent amount of stretch are another one of the features. Still not exactly what I'm looking for however. I'm so very picky when it comes to jeans. But if you're not as picky as me, you might end up getting lucky. A total breathe of fresh air compared to a number of other stores that don't even seem to stock plus denim, or stop at a certain size, or bedazzle the hell out of them.
Many casual shirts were around, in lots of different colours. These could be worn underneath dresses and tunics which is a trend that is here to stay for winter as it's practical and warming for the cold nights around. The t-shirts have a little puffed sleeve as well, which I just adore, so cute. I want one in every colour. There were plenty of graphic print styled casual t-shirts which gave me pause and horrid 80s flashbacks at first, but upon closer inspection I liked the look of them. Perfect with jeans or black pants. Excellent work out gear as well.
The 'night clubbing' wear left a lot to be desired however. Maybe it's because I'm not exactly a 'clubber' (more like a 'pubber' hah) but the outfits seemed to be very lyrca and sequined oriented, reminiscent of the early to mid 90s looks we used to rock. In fact, I'm recalling a bright pink halter style with little sequins around the bust line that I used to wear paired with black pants and platform shoes. I thought I was a Spice Girl. Hey, if the 90s are coming back, does that mean I can get out my flanno and baby doll dresses? Damn those were comfy.
Cute hoodies and cardis at ok prices and nice colours. I'd prefer both to be a longer length, for warmth as well as the fact that I'm just so over the cropped trend. That's not to say that the cute cropped black swing jacket (on sale!) didn't try and sway me though. It tried. I didn't give in, I stayed strong, but who's to say what tomorrow will bring?
Dresses had me rather excited. There were some lovely party styles for those who don't want to go the glittery top and pants path. Some strapless and some with a nice deep v. In fact, the deep v dress was polka dotty, but with large dots, something I like better than the small dots. Winter dresses are usually dark and plain, but my mother managed to pick up a bargain last night, it was a mid brown with teal and lighter brown designs on it and it looked fabulous on her. Now to convince her to wear tights and boots and I've got myself a trendy mum. Other dresses were in much the same vein as this style, in loose, blousy styles with either puffy or romantic sleeves.
Overall, I'm rather impressed with Big City Chic for winter. Decent jeans, at ok prices, pretty dresses on sale and cute tops and hoodies. I did happen to see a top/dress/tunic (I really couldn't tell) whose original price was $120, but was on sale for practically half that. I would be so very unimpressed if I bought the thing (whose fabric - chiffonesque so doesn't warrant the price) and then found it on sale not long after. In fact, I kind of think that Big City Chic is like Sportsgirl in a way, clothing comes out, is around at full price for a week or two, and then drops drastically down on sale. If that's the case, it may be best to wait a little while in order to pick up a bargain!
