Rockmans and Katies - The Reviews

January 6th 2007 01:41
Massive apologies for the lateness of this entry, pretend this is still Friday. It's still Friday in some parts of the world!

Thursday night, I went and checked out Rockmans and Katies.

I will start by saying that Rockmans usually only goes up to a size 18, and I originally thought Katies only went up to a size 18 as well, but I discovered that they actually go up to a 20.

First in the review is Rockmans. I must say, I was a tad bit disappointed with the clothing on offer here, as well as the service, or lack thereof. There was a rather decent amount of clothing for business wear - some suits in some different cuts, lots of short sleeved and three quarter sleeved tops in lovely colours and prints, but as for other clothing available? Well, there wasn't much.

There were some cute cardigans, but even these weren't in a summer weight fabric. I realise stores usually have their clothing on the racks a season ahead, but I don't even want to be thinking about winter at the moment, let alone actually seeing winter weight clothing on the racks.

I must say there was at least one cute dress there, in a very pretty print. Sort of floral, and flowy, very causal - but that was it. There may have been more stuff coming in, but I wouldn't have known, the sales assistants were so busy talking about how soandso is such an "arsehole" and "oh my god, how could he say such a thing?"

This was annoying me, so I moved on to Katies. And was assaulted immediately by stripes. Stripes everywhere! On skirts, on tops, on cardigans, on dresses on bags. It was rather overwhelming.

I still haven't decided whether I like the stripes or not. On the one hand, there was this adorable summer weight cardigan with pretty little buttons on one rack. On the other, there were these boat neck tops with red and white stripes that looked a little bit like one of those peppermint lollies (speaking of, what are they called? I can't remember.). I think I'm leaning towards mostly like, in perhaps just plain black and white, rather than the other colours that were available in stripes. But, I can be rather conservative in my clothing choices, so someone more adventurous would definitely be able to pull the myriad of stripey colours off.

Other than the stripes (that is starting to not even look like a real word. Stripes!) there were plenty of dresses at Katies. This made me do a little jump and squeal, as you must know by now that dresses are my thing. My obsession. My lurrrrrve. There was this soso cute chiffon leopard print dress, that was rather booby and flowy. I know a lot of people think that leopard print screams tacky, but this was actually rather subtle. It whispered, rather than screamed. And, for a mostly conversative gal, I just seem to adore leopard prints.

Other dresses include: a pretty floral, in a sort of cross over effect at the chest region, winter fabric dresses on sale, white, cotton, casual dresses, and one linen one that I chose to ignore, and I don't even know why I'm talking about it now, GO AWAY LINEN.

Ahem. Anyway, there's a fair amount of stuff still on sale, including a black and white spotted skirt that I picked up for $9.45! God, insane! I'm not normally a fan of spots, but I just fell in love with this skirt when I tried it on. So lovely.

However, this brings me to the sizing issues at Katies. For a store that supposedly goes up to a 20, and an XXL, my mother - who most days is an 18/20, was squeezed into one of the dresses there (and it was a dress made out of that stretchy fabric) when she tried it on. She was rather disappointed, as it was a lovely dress, it's just that she thought the sizing there is a tad off, and I tend to agree.

Out of the two stores, I obviously liked Katies the best, but I must say that both stores are consistent with the off sizing issue. Not as bad as say ... Crossroads (speaking of, I will probably be reviewing Crossroads as an afforable trendy option soon), but still a little disappointing.

But, it wasn't all bad. There was some ok stuff in the one store, and lovely stuff in the other, and both stores are very reasonable in their pricing for the qaulity of the clothing. I'd shop at Rockmans for businessy clothes, and Katies for dresses, skirts, and if I somehow end up with a stripe fetish.

I used to buy Rockmans clothing but recently I have decided not to after having come across dreadful service at its Brendon park outlet

With its unique store policies and non-negotiable terms, I find it hard to justify my speding The so called store manager radiates the view that this store only caters to a class of cusomters and not everyone.

Hence the switch. However I believe not all the stores are the same and Rockmans is still value for money if you know ways to deal with these non-pro staff members
